There's just nothing about this guy that inspires optimism in me. Even the time periods where everyone says he did well (which I disagree with) were in the nineties and early aughts.

Lee:
1) It's true I think the Colts used to revolve entirely around Peyton (as made clear by them getting the #1 pick last year solely because he was out) but Peyton is one of the best quarterbacks of all time. Luck might be one day, but right now he's just pretty good, and he's a rookie. Arians is 2/2 as far as developing QBs goes. His first year as the Pitt OC was 2007, and it's no coincidence that was really Roethlisberger's first great year.

2) The Colts beat 3 playoff teams: Green Bay, Minnesota, and Houston. Two of those teams have superb defenses. If we're discounting 3 wins over playoff teams, we can't count any wins as impressive.

3) Mike Martz had a reputation for getting QBs murdered, and he did that with Jay. The Bears hired Martz after two unsuccessful stints with the Lions and Niners. That was also a terrible hire. Cam Cameron was ALSO coming off a terrible job he had done. Arians is coming off a stretch of success reaching back to 2007.

And as to your last point, you're basically saying what I'm saying. The Bears hired a blah guy so he would simply be a good offensive coordinator. He will call plays and probably have next to no interaction with the defense. But why are we settling for that?

Also, sorry Goose! I told Red earlier that my response to Bear related things until the draft will be "Yayyyyyy" from now on as I attempt to build optimism for the upcoming season. He's the HC now, and I vented, so I'll try to support the guy as best I can. But man, does this hire feel awful.Iggins!https://www.blogger.com/profile/00304872897825135353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4949075318550910381.post-39274674140408145962013-01-17T12:25:03.586-06:002013-01-17T12:25:03.586-06:00While I agree with Iggins! that Trestman doesn'...While I agree with Iggins! that Trestman doesn't have a convincing track record (also, I groaned the instant I saw the word "disciplinarian"), I was never sold on Arians for three reasons:

1. The reasons the Colts got the #1 pick isn't the same as reasons the Raiders or Lions getting a #1 pick. The Colts' success revolved entirely on Payton Manning's ability to dissect almost every NFL defense. Instead of waiting for Manning to return, they decided to get someone who's just as talented.

2. I'm sorry, but the Colts going 11-5 with their head coach in chemotherapy is, though touching, not that impressive. Especially when you consider the fact that those wins came either against QBs as bad as Ryan Fitzpatrick or defenses as bad as Green Bay's. If anything, they prove that the Colts have a fighting chance as long as they have Andrew Luck and Reggie Wayne.

3. Even though Bruce Arians has a reputation for working well with QBs, so do Mike Martz and Cam Cameron. These three also have a reputation for shitty play calling and forgetting how to use running backs. Case in point: Exhibit A.

In my opinion, the Bears don't need someone who improves Jay Cutler. He's already a decent QB with elite talent. Mind you he's not an elite QB, but he doesn't have to be with Marshall, Jeffery, Forte, and Bush. The defense isn't as terrifying as it is when Brian Urlacher's healthy, but it's still in the top 15. All we need is an offensive coach who will make adequate game plans and play calls. Hopefully, Trestman is smart enough to do that.Leenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4949075318550910381.post-63701026595834987112013-01-17T12:11:05.770-06:002013-01-17T12:11:05.770-06:00Iggins, your comments have made me really cynical/...Iggins, your comments have made me really cynical/nervous about the hiring, after spending all day yesterday feeling optimistic.

I feel like a 6 year-old who just discovered Santa is fake.

Thanks.Goosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18140989638916772471noreply@blogger.com
